HARLYN BAY
The most sheltered bay for surf in the region.
Harlyn bay located just south of Padstow offers ample parking and a wonderful golden stretch of sand. The most sheltered bay for surf in the region. The perfect Spring and Autumn location on bigger days for surfing as it offers protection from both southerly and westerly winds. It is usually the smallest spot in the area, which can often make it the busiest.
We would usually choose Harlyn as our go to place to surf when the swell and waves are much bigger on the main westerly beaches. Its north facing orientation offers great protection from the bigger waves. It is surfable throughout the tide as mentioned, but really doesn’t like extremes of tide, so we avoid spring low and spring high whenever possible. The beach is well protected from the wind and like’s south in the wind but can handle a bit of east and a bit west, just doesn’t like the northerly wind much.
SURF SPOT QUALITY
A faster and shorter wave than some in the area, particularly at low tide. As the tide gets higher the wave becomes a little easier with a longer length of ride. It doesn’t really like extremes of tide, both high or low. Well suited for all surfers when conditions are good.
Picks up south west, west and north west swells, however requires more swell than all other beaches often best in spring and autumn.
Best wind from the south, south east and south west, however can be ok on light easterlys. Poor with any north in the wind.
Best tides around mid to high tide either on the drop or on the push.
Crowded all year round.
